- RioGlass Solar Manufacturing Plant
project has received an Industrial/Manufacturing category Award of Merit in ENR Southwest’s Best Projects of 2012. Howard S. Wright’s Arizona office (a Balfour Beatty company) teamed with Deutsch Architecture for the Design-Build delivery of this project, the first of its kind in the U.S. The new plant serves as a model for collaboration and an outstanding example of what a dedicated team of professionals can accomplish in nearly impossible time frames.
This $16 million project consisted of a 160,000 sf manufacturing and office building located on 10 acres in Surprise, Arizona, a suburb of Phoenix. The project represents Phase 1 of RioGlass Solar’s new North American manufacturing facility and the home of their U.S. Headquarters. RioGlass Solar is a Spain-based company that produces tempered glass reflectors used in solar thermal power plants.
This fast-track design-build project enabled RioGlass Solar to start producing mirrors just 7 ½ months after the start of design. The first batch of mirrors produced will be used for parabolic concentrators at Abengoa Solar’s 280-MW Solana Generating Station. Electricity generated by the plant will generate enough power for 70,000 homes.
