This 3-story, 210,750 GSF, 5,000 seat multipurpose arena hosts university and community events such as concerts, lectures, and large-scale meetings, as well as be the home for the men’s ice hockey, wrestling, and women’s gymnastics programs. A second ice rink functions as a public practice facility and hosts both minor and adult ice hockey leagues. The arena is an integrated steel frame structure surrounding a long-span, prefabricated, steel beam system. The stands around the main arena are pre-cast concrete supported on steel frames and the exterior skin system utilizes metal building components. The existing soil conditions were poor and full of old construction material which drove the site to be dynamically compacted to support the slab on grade and caissons to be used to support the overall structure. This project took advantage of the strengths of all of our available resources in the valley to create an economically feasible structure that is a huge contribution to the Novus Innovation corridor and the surrounding community.
