Renovations to the 52-year old Phoenix International Speedway’s were completed in time for the 2018 NASCAR fall season; this is the first upgrade to the raceway since it opened. The modernization project included new grandstands with individual seating for up to 45,000 people, design and renovation of the suites including the grand stairs (Canyon Stairs) leading to the new upgraded suites, the addition of four escalators and five elevators, the raceway tunnel, new souvenir and guest services areas, as well as a state-of-the-art video board structure.

Racing fans are able to choose from the raceway’s 19 new suites and 32 renovated suites. The new NASCAR garages are open for people to see teams working on the cars and participating in pre-race meetings, as well as the Victory Lane celebration after the race.

The state-of-the-art video board structure showcases the beauty of modern steel design standing 146 feet tall above grade. Engineered with high strength steel columns, wide flange beams, and diagonal angle bracing, the system delivers strength and stability while maintaining an efficient form. A steel braced frame system provides lateral stability, ensuring the structure remains rigid and secure under dynamic environmental forces. Catwalk levels are integrated throughout the structure, designed with wide flange beams and diagonal steel angles to provide safe and efficient access for maintenance and inspections. Supported on reinforced concrete caissons and pile caps, the foundation ensures reliable stability from challenging dynamic forces. The structure was analyzed to verify overall rigidity and resilience against high wind loads, guaranteeing safety, durability, and long-term structural integrity. This design combines engineering excellence with a visual impact to create a statement piece for this international racetrack.
