Hovering over Sky Harbor Boulevard, a bridge and 700-foot-long corridor, with three sections of coupled movable walkways, allows travelers to move efficiently from Terminal 3 to the new North Concourse building.
The site constraints demanded structural creativity and innovation to ensure zero disruption to critical infrastructure. Columns and foundations thread between a maze of existing roadways, underground utilities, and retaining walls. Cantilevered tapered plate girders create overhangs up to 28 feet and support intersecting beams spanning over 110 feet.
Cantilevered trusses, suspended stair shafts, custom plate girders, hybrid lateral moment frames, composite cantilevered columns, and a variety of foundation systems combine into a highly coordinated structure that leads to a vertical circulation hub that extends 40 feet underground and accommodates future escalators and a tunnel to Terminal 4.
